DAYTON, Ohio — Not even four minutes into his junior season, Dayton forward Chris Wright stuck a 3-point shot from the right corner that seemed to be worth a lot more than 3 points. It lingered as a declaration that all his summer work would justify the attention he had gained mostly for looking like he’d become a great player.
The preseason college basketball yearbooks loved Wright, a high-jumping 6-8 forward, almost as much People magazine loves “Jon & Kate.” Entering Dayton’s opening game against Creighton, however, there was a sense that, like the reality TV stars, Wright hadn’t done enough to earn his fame.
If Chris Wright continues to play like this, the Flyers will win a lot of games.
Eventually, he got around to it Saturday afternoon. He rescued Dayton from a 10-point first-half deficit, overwhelmed the undermanned Blue Jays and delivered to a sellout crowd at UD Arena a 90-80 victory that likely ranks as the first quality win of the 2009-10 season.
