Boise State TE Kyle Efaw got a first down on a gutsy fourth-quarter fake punt.
When you think Boise State football, gadget plays come to mind. It’s fitting, then, that the latest, greatest Broncos victory came Monday night thanks to a fake punt. The play, like the hook-and-ladder and Statue of Liberty plays that helped BSU beat Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, shows the key to coach Chris Petersen’s success: no fear of failure. An incomplete pass or sack on that 4th-and-9 play Monday night would have given favored TCU the ball in range to attempt a go-ahead field goal. But the consequences didn’t scare Petersen, or punter Kyle Brotzman, or tight end Kyle Efaw, who called and converted the play of bowl season so far. The sequence was characteristic of Broncos football, as was the finish – a BSU victory.
Boise’s got a chance
Nine months remain until next season begins. And already, Boise State must feel good about its chances to reach another BCS bowl, and maybe the national championship game. With wins over Oregon and TCU this year, plus 20 starters …
