Three cures for the Colts’ Super Bowl hangover

MIAMI — Only two teams have won the Super Bowl after losing it the previous season.

The Dolphins were the last team to do it, winning Super Bowl 7 after losing Super Bowl 6. But that was in 1973, before Peyton Manning was even born.

That is another reason for Manning and the Colts to feel lousy in the aftermath of Super Bowl 44. No matter how consistent your franchise, opportunities to win Super Bowls are precious. The Colts have made the playoffs eight consecutive seasons, winning at least 12 games in each of those years. But they only have one Super Bowl victory to show for it.

Sunday’s 31-17 loss to the Saints was particularly painful because the Colts were the favorites and they jumped to an early 10-point lead, against a team that never had been to a Super Bowl.

“It’s miserable,” Colts tight end Dallas Clark said, describing how the Colts feel. “It’s still a little early to comment to feel the true feeling. But it’s not good.”

As good as Manning is, there is no guarantee the Colts ever will get another crack at the Super Bowl. So while the Saints revel and the Colts regroup, here are three issues the Colts must resolve in their quest to reach Super Bowl 45 in Arlington, Texas:

1. Improve the running game. Colts’ opponents showed little respect for it this season. Why would they? They were last in the NFL in rushing (80.9 yards per game), and even with Manning the Colts need more balance.
