Sporting News college basketball columnist Mike DeCourcy weighs in on five hot topics in his sport this week.
1. Of all the D-I teams still undefeated in league play, which ones do you think will end that way?
DeCourcy: It’s not surprising to discover there were only nine teams unbeaten against conference opponents heading into Wednesday night. I’m not sure Princeton should get a ton of credit for that, at least not yet — the Tigers have only played two Ivy League games.
I wouldn’t expect Kansas to get through the Big 12 without a loss, although I may change my mind if KU still is perfect after Monday’s trip to Texas. If Villanova were to get through the list of road games it faces before the conference tournament, it should be the No. 1 overall seed, no questions asked.
The one that appears to be in the best shape to finish it off is Morgan State. The Bears are halfway through their MEAC schedule without a defeat — but, remarkably, they’ve already played all but two of their league road games.
Butler should be able to make it. The Bulldogs are through 11 games of an 18-game schedule. Four of their final seven are at home. And they’ve won on the homecourts of three of their four nearest rivals for the Horizon League championship.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino wants to the minimum NBA age limit raised to 20.
Siena is through 12 games of its 18-game schedule and has beaten its three closest competitors on the road. But there is a pending four-game road trip (including a BracketBusters game at Butler) that could wear down the Saints by the end.
