As they stood on the sideline during the Orange Bowl, Stephan Virgil told Brandon Flowers he had something for him.
On the next series, Virgil snared an interception in the end zone that negated a Cincinnati scoring threat and led to a go-ahead field goal for Virginia Tech just before halftime.
“That’s for you,” current Virginia Tech cornerback Stephan said he told Flowers, the Hokie-turned-Kansas City Chief.
That’s how Virginia Tech’s program is building upon itself as it becomes the pre-eminent power in the ACC. Led by Frank Beamer and one of the game’s most stable coaching staffs, the Hokies have won two of the four ACC championship games and played in a third since the conference expanded to 12 schools.
Along with Texas and USC, Virginia Tech is one of just three schools with at least 10 wins in each of the last five seasons. As standout players leave for the NFL, their successors vow to continue the winning ways.
“They preach a lot about tradition here,” Virgil said. “That’s what winning football is. It’s about tradition. The guys before us, to see how they did it and how hard they worked to get where they did. …That’s what we’re looking forward to doing this year.”
