Count Dick MacPherson among the many counting down the seconds until Saturday’s Florida-Alabama showdown.

But if the former Syracuse coach had his way, fans would have to wait a little longer for the SEC’s ision winners to meet.

“It’s a darn shame Alabama and Florida have to play the SEC championship game,” MacPherson said Sunday. “It should be the national championship game.”

The 12-0 Gators and 12-0 Tide have traded turns atop the Legends Poll every week this season. Sunday, they flip-flopped again, with Florida moving up one spot to No. 1, Alabama down one to No. 2.

The Gators should still be there a week from now, the coaching greats say, after beating the Tide and earning a trip back to the BCS national title game.

“I’m going to go with Florida,” former Arkansas coach Frank Broyles said. “Defenses and running backs can only take you so far, but the quarterback takes you to the top level. That’s what (Tim) Tebow does for Florida.”<br …
