Jeff Fisher: The Steve McNair I Knew Would Want Me to Say ‘Sorry’

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who coached Steve McNair for his first 11 seasons in the NFL, remembered the slain quarterback Monday as a loving husband and father and a good man both on and off the field. He also spoke for McNair, even apologizing on McNair’s behalf and suggesting that McNair would want to say he’s sorry for his relationship with Sahel Kazemi, the woman who allegedly killed him and killed herself.

“The Steve McNair that I knew,” Fisher said, “would want me to say, ‘Sorry. I’m not perfect. We all make decisions sometimes that are not in our best interests. Please forgive me.’ The Steve McNair that I knew would want me to say, ‘Celebrate my life. For what I did on the field. For what I did in the community. For what kind of teammate I was.’ That’s what the Steve that I knew would say.”

Fisher was in Iraq for a Fourth of July weekend USO tour, and he found out about McNair’s death when former Titans running back Eddie George …
