Cincinnati enjoyed a dream season last year, knocking off West Virginia, Louisville and Pitt in November to claim the school’s first Big East championship since it joined the conference in 2005. With starting quarterback Tony Pike returning, the Bearcats sit as favorite to repeat and return to a BCS bowl.
Pike chatted with Sporting News’ Dave Curtis about 2009 and the past, present and future of Cincinnati football.

Q: You do anything fun before coming back for summer workouts?
A: Not really. My family lives only about 10 minutes from campus, so it was just kind of go home and have a few days, couple weeks, to relax. I went down to Indiana and Tennessee a little bit. Nothing too exciting.
Q: How’s it different getting ready for a season after winning the league last year?
A: As far as what we did in the offseason, I think it’s going to be the same stuff that got us to where we got last year. The biggest thing in the back of our heads is that we know this year we’re not sneaking up on anybody. People are going to be geared up to play us because we’re the Big East champs. We’re kind of looking at it like there’s no Big East champion right now, and we have to go out and win it again.
