Alabama’s championship created a special memory

The national championship game in Pasadena, Calif., between Alabama and Texas means so much more in Alabama than in Texas. I’ve been living in the state of Alabama for 20 years now and Auburn and Alabama is in the forefront of every conversation no matter where you are: church, Walmart, getting gas, school.

One year ago, one of my best friends and I were watching the national championship game together like we do most years. Last year was different though. My buddy Dondi Lee was in ICU recovering from cancer surgery. He had a lump on his neck and the day of the game the doctors were going in to see what the lump was. Six hours later the news was not good. He had cancer on the back of his tongue and part of his neck. So in ICU recovery, we watched Florida handle Oklahoma. Little did I know, my buddy Dondi would have 37 radiation treatments and nine or so chemo treatments still ahead of him.
