Alabama guard Mike Johnson, a senior from Pensacola, Fla., is playing in his last Iron Bowl. A preseason All-American, he is the veteran—with 39 career starts—on an offensive line that has helped the Crimson Tide to an 11-0 record and a spot in the SEC championship for the second year in a row.

The first Alabama-Auburn game I saw, I was actually in the stands at Auburn when I was redshirted as a freshman (in 2005). I didn’t get to travel with the team, so I wanted to go see what all the fuss was about. I went down there with a ticket, my own ticket, and watched it from the stands. It was ugly, I’ll tell you. 

I just remember it wasn’t actually the game that stood out; it was the talk afterward. The talk around here about that game lasts all year. When you win or when you lose, you’re going to hear about it for the next 365 days, until the next one.

When I got here I wasn’t really sure what this game was really going to mean to me or to this team. In this case this year, though, it means everything. It obviously means a lot because we’re trying to finish up …
