At least two sportswriters covering the Duke-Connecticut final in the NIT Season Tip-Off wrote columns about the game regarding the perception that Duke is “unathletic” and posited that one reason this opinion exists is the number of Caucasian players in the Blue Devils’ rotation.

According to Adam Zagoria of zagsblog.com, this became a line of questioning in postgame interviews when someone told Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski that ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb had called the team “alarmingly unathletic.”

One wonders where these inaccurate perceptions originate in sports. At least this one had an etymology.
